Making a site with a One.com template

When I started to make this website, I first sat back and thought about how the look of this site should be, which function(s) it should contain, what colors I wanted to use and where the navigational menu should be.

After having created many websites I have discovered that it's better to first think this over thoroughly, before starting the actual building of the site. It's always harder to make changes in the end. You can compare it to building a house: you first making a drawing of how it should look. Then you put down the foundations and then the walls, roof, and so on. Changing the foundations in the end will make things lots harder.

Preparations before you start creating your website with WebCreator and a One.com Template?

  • What colors do you want to use? For example when creating this website I wanted to stick to the green - black - gray colors that correspond with my banner.

  • What content should the site have and how do you want to organize it?

Take a piece of paper and make a drawing of how your site should be set up, where the navigational menu should be, what banner you want to use, if you want a side bar, how many pages you need, etc. E.g. If you need many pages, you might want to opt for a vertical menu since that gives you more space.

  • It is a good idea to write the text and content for the site, before you start making the site. It makes it easier to organize your site, and to decide what pictures to use, and how many pages you need.

  • You can first just type the text in a text editor like Word or Notepad. When you are creating the site you can then simply copy-paste the text in your web pages.

  • Make a selection of the images you want to use on your website. Make sure you have the right to use them and save them to a web friendly format like .jpg or .png. Keep in mind that the larger an image is, the more time it will take to load your site, so you want to save your images in as low a resolution as possible without compromising too much on the quality. It is also important to give them correct names, so you can easily find them back while working with them. When uploading your images, use Filemanager to create a folder e.g. "images-website" and store all the images in there, that way it's easy to keep an overview.

Making the site:

  • Now you are ready to create the website.

When selecting a One.com template keep the following rule in mind: Everything can be edited, except the menu (form and colors). So choose your template based on how the menu looks.

This website:

In the preparation phase I have decided on the following things.

  • Colors: green, gray, black, corresponding with my banner/logo.

  • I want my banner on top, and have the main menu horizontally immediately under the banner. Furthermore I want a two column page with a sidebar on the right with links (submenu) to  pages that contain additional information on how that page is build, tips, and so on. Furthermore I want social media buttons (Facebook, Google+, Twitter) on every page.

  • As content I have many HOW to pages in the sidebar on the right. The main menu consists out of just five pages; Home, One.com features,- 3rd party features, Blog and Gallery. All main content will be in the body on the left, under the main menu. Furthermore the website will have a lot of print screens showing how I made this site.
  • Based on the above, I have selected the Football template: The green menu fits with my color scheme, and the basic setup of the template fulfills my requirements.
